this play by david henry hwang was awesome! very well-written, entertaining, and thought-provoking. if you're in LA, you gotta go see it! it's playing at the mark taper forum until july 1st!
some reviews from entertainment today and backstage
it's kind of funny how i got interested in seeing this play.
it all started off with my visit to portland, oregon. while visiting a friend there, i, of course, had to stop by powell's bookstore, who claim to be the largest independent bookstore in america. and at that bookstore (at any bookstore, really), i always visit the ethnic section to see if there are any books written by korean/ korean-american authors or written about korean/ korean-americans. the first time i was there, i got this big ol' thick book on north korea and kim jong-il which i never got around to finishing. and this second time around, i was not disappointed as well. one of the books that i bought was a book called "the asian mystique." in it, it talked about david henry hwang and that's how i first heard about M. Butterfly, which was his first major hit and for which he even won a Tony Award. So somehow, i heard about Yellow Face (i still can't remember how) and I really wanted to see it. it's funny too, the play mentioned some comments that i wouldn't have even recognized if i hadn't read some parts of the book that day too.
